Flynn Advocates for Rugby Investment at Renton City Council

Seattle Rugby Club President Kevin Flynn stood before the Renton City Council this week with a simple but powerful message: rugby isn't just a sport—it's a pathway for young people to build futures.

More Than Competition

Flynn's testimony centered on what rugby actually does in communities. The sport creates opportunities for employment, stable housing, higher education, and career advancement through a network of players, coaches, alumni, and supporters who believe in each other.

"Rugby is more than a sport," Flynn told the council. "It's a community that helps young people develop leadership, resilience, and meaningful connections that can open doors throughout their lives."

A Regional Movement

Flynn didn't make the case alone. Standing alongside him was a diverse delegation representing the full spectrum of regional rugby—members of the Seattle Slam wheelchair rugby team, youth rugby programs, and adult clubs from across the community. Their presence made the argument undeniable: rugby's impact spans all ages and abilities.

The group asked city leaders to consider expanding access to facilities, programming, and resources that would let rugby continue growing in Renton. More facilities mean more young athletes discovering the sport. Better resources mean stronger programs delivering mentorship, teamwork, and life-changing opportunities.

The Beginning of a Conversation

For Seattle Rugby Club and its community partners, this presentation represents something larger than a single council meeting. It's the opening move in an ongoing conversation with local leaders about what's possible when a city invests in a sport that builds people, not just teams.

We're optimistic about what comes next. With stronger community support, rugby can continue to serve as a powerful vehicle for personal growth, inclusion, and opportunity for generations of athletes to come.
